Reebok International Limited is a US industrial company specializing in the production of sporting goods and accessories. Belonging to the German industrial group of Adidas AG, it was founded in 1895, originally under the name of Mercury Sports, and was renamed Reebok in 1958. Named after the Afrikaans-Dutch diction of Reebok, a species of African antelope. Company founders Joe and Jeff Foster found the name "Reebok" in a dictionary won in a competition by Joe Foster when 'he was a boy; the dictionary was in a South African edition, hence the spelling of the name. Reebok is now owned by the German sportswear giant Adidas, which definitively acquired the company in early 2006.
