ASICS, also known as Onitsuka Tiger, is a Japanese sports goods company founded in 1949. It produces mainly running shoes but also many other sports disciplines. The company name is the acronym of the Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano". On July 21, 1977, Onitsuka Co. Ltd. merged with GTO and JELENK, forming ASICS Corporation. ASICS footwear was introduced in the United States in 1964 with the Tiger brand, thanks to the agreement signed with Onitsuka by Phil Knight, future co-founder of Nike.
